Since 2008, the Green Packaging Star Award of the magazine “KOMPACK” has annually put the focus on sustainable packaging and packaging-relevant processes developed by companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the special category of security, the company Securikett came out on top this year with its “IT’S PAPER” series of paper-based security labels.

Werner Horn, CEO of Securikett, said at the Nuremberg packaging trade fair: “We are very pleased about this award because we see it as recognition of this important technology that is now available after several years of research and development work. The demands on goals we set for our paper-based security labels were high. In general, the paper labels had to be able to do everything from the outset that we have developed over the years with our tamper-proof VOID labels made of plastic. The biggest challenge was to ensure that the VOID-effect that leaves customized patterns, or the word “VOID”, after peeling off the label, is also clearly visible using the paper label construction.”
Vanessa Mitterer, head of R&D reports, “that the paper-based seals and tapes not easily only pass all tear tests, drop tests and ageing tests well and are actually superior to their plastic counterparts in terms of manipulation tests with liquids.”
Award winner: The “IT’S PAPER” series
The innovative paper security labels are also called “PaperVOIDs” because of their ability to leave a VOID effect on a surface. Due to the great demand, Securikett has already extended this product family several times since its market launch. Additional security features have also been added, including liquid indicators. Heat and cold tampering indicators on the labels ensure that original sealed packages can be clearly distinguished from tampered ones. Also, with the inclusion of a QR code on the label, many digital services can be provided, such as product authentication and product tracking.
Eco Vadis – Rating
Securikett’s sustainability policy is not only measurable at the product level. In 2022, the company achieved silver status in the widely recognized “EcoVadis” sustainability rating. This puts Securikett among the top 25% of all companies rated in 2022.
Company’s next goal: World Star Award
Winners of the Green Packaging Star Award are automatically qualified to submit their innovations to the World Packaging Organization’s “World Star” global packaging competition in 2023. Securikett sees good chances of being nominated because globally there will hardly be a comparable product that combines sustainability and product or brand protection in this way.
